Pre-fabricated chimney tops were installed on most fireplaces in homes since the 1980's.
Typically they are metal boxes with metal piping. These fireplaces and their metal pipe usually already have a "termination cap" that keeps rain out of the pipe. We then build a "chimney pan" that is custom built for your chimney chase that keeps rain out of the chimney while sealing around the pipe.
See the photo below of a typical pan.

If performing a replacement of your chimney pan due to damage or a leak, we will likely reuse the termination cap unless we deem it part of the problem or damaged beyond use. If that's the case, we will look at ordering a replacement. Most chimney leaks only necessitate replacing the pan so that is our default process.
The pan and termination cap do all the hard work of keeping the rain out of the house while also letting the smoke out. We can then pair the pan with a decorative top so you don't have to look at the silver termination cap. While these are mostly decorative, they can help block wind. You may want to consider a decorative top in areas around mountains, valleys, and lakes. One important thing to note is because the pan keeps the rain out, the decorative top is open on the top to allow extra room for smoke to escape. See below photos of optional decorative tops.

Note: Pans come default as galvanized unless ordered otherwise. Black or any other colors can be changed for an upcharge. Decorative Prefabricated Tops will be black by default and if ordering with a pan, the pan will then also be made black. If ordering a different color, both will be made the same color unless otherwise requested.
